RRISD early-college applications open for 2027–28 |
Current eighth-graders can compare a free associate-degree pathway with nursing-focused P-TECH |

Round Rock ISD families with an eighth-grader have a timely choice to consider: two early-college pathways are accepting applications for the 2027–28 school year.
The options share a goal—helping students move toward college and careers earlier—but they offer very different high-school experiences.
Early College High School allows students to work toward a high-school diploma and an associate degree at the same time.
Students may choose from four no-cost degree tracks: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Engineering, or Associate of Education and Training.
That breadth may appeal to students who want a substantial college head start while keeping several future majors or careers open.
The district’s P-TECH Nursing Prep pathway is more specialized, combining high-school coursework with college classes and hands-on experiences connected to health-care credentials.
For a student who is already curious about nursing or patient care, that focus can make high school feel more connected to a real profession.
Neither program is simply a collection of extra advanced classes.
Each pathway can shape where a student learns, how the week is structured, which courses come first and what support the family may need.
That makes fit more important than prestige.
Families should compare academic interests, transportation, campus environment, workload and long-term goals before choosing.
A student who wants broad college-credit options may lean toward Early College High School, while a student already drawn to health care may want to study P-TECH more closely.
The best next step is a conversation, not a rushed application.
Open both program pages with your student and write down what feels exciting, what feels uncertain and what practical questions remain.
Then ask the current middle-school counselor about application requirements, information sessions, transportation and what a typical week looks like.
The district’s announcement confirms that applications are open, but it does not place a deadline in the announcement itself.
Families should rely on the live application pages for current dates and requirements instead of waiting for a paper reminder.
For Round Rock households, the potential payoff is substantial: students can shorten the path to a college credential and explore demanding careers before paying full college costs.
The decision still belongs to the student and family.
A thoughtful comparison now can help an eighth-grader enter high school with a clearer sense of direction and a program chosen for the right reasons. |
